A Journey Around the World in Every Sip: Exploring Our Coffee Origins

by | Feb 2, 2024 | Uncategorized

At TiA Coffee, each cup tells a story—a global journey through some of the most renowned coffee-growing regions in the world. From lush volcanic soils to high-altitude plateaus, every origin offers a unique flavor experience. Join us as we explore the diverse regions behind our signature coffee blends.

The Americas:

Brazil: A Powerhouse of Coffee Production

Brazil has been the world’s top coffee producer for over 150 years, contributing about one-third of global production. The Sul de Minas region is renowned for its smooth, rich coffee. Most Brazilian Arabica beans are naturally processed, allowing the cherries to dry under the sun, preserving their natural sweetness. Coffees from Brazil, such as our blend, are known for their balanced, mild flavor with notes of nuts and light citrus. Whether you enjoy a soft cup with subtle complexity or a rich espresso, Brazilian coffee offers a consistent and smooth drinking experience.

Guatemala: A Symphony of Volcanic Flavors

Guatemala is a land of stunning natural beauty, with 37 volcanoes defining its dramatic landscape. Among these peaks lies Huehuetenango, one of the country’s most famous coffee-growing regions. The unique high-elevation environment—hot days and cool, moist nights—helps produce beans that are dense and complex in flavor. Huehuetenango’s coffees boast citric brightness and fruity aromas, offering a sophisticated, gourmet experience. Our Guatemalan coffee, sourced from the remote Las Amapolas farm, captures these qualities beautifully with notes of chocolate, berries, and subtle wine-like acidity.

Costa Rica: A Commitment to Excellence

Costa Rica’s Tarrazú region is world-renowned for producing some of the finest Arabica coffee. The combination of high altitudes, cool nights, and sedimentary soils creates ideal growing conditions. The CoopeTarrazú cooperative, established in 1960, works to ensure quality and sustainability through innovative farming practices. Coffees from this region are prized for their smooth, fine acidity and rich, full flavors. Expect vibrant citrus notes and a clean, bright finish—perfect for your morning pour-over.

Colombia: A Land of Eternal Harvests

Colombia’s Huila region is a jewel of coffee production, with its rich volcanic soils and unique microclimates. Thanks to its equatorial location, Huila’s coffee farms can produce beans year-round, offering both a main harvest and a “fly crop” during the year. Caturra variety beans are especially prized for their size and smooth, balanced flavor. Colombian coffee is known for its rich body, caramel sweetness, and hints of tropical fruit—a perfect cup for any time of day.

Asia:

Papua New Guinea: Where Coffee Meets Conservation

Though Papua New Guinea only started cultivating coffee commercially in the 1950s, it quickly gained a reputation for producing some of the finest Arabica beans in the world. Sigri Plantation, one of the pioneering estates, grows Typica varieties in fertile volcanic soils at elevations of 1,550 meters. Beyond coffee, the plantation is also known for its commitment to biodiversity and community development. This coffee’s smooth body and fruity brightness, combined with its environmental consciousness, make it a truly remarkable cup.

India: Spices, Legends, and Coffee

India’s coffee story is as rich and colorful as the country itself. According to legend, the saint Baba Budan smuggled seven coffee seeds from Yemen into southern India in the 17th century, planting the first coffee trees in Karnataka. Today, India is known for its high-quality Arabica and robusta beans, grown in the biodiverse Western Ghats. Our Indian robusta offers a smooth, nutty flavor with hints of spice, perfect for a flavorful espresso or a bold filter brew.

Indonesia: Tradition Meets Innovation

Indonesia’s coffee history is intertwined with Dutch colonization, but today, smallholder farmers dominate the country’s production, using time-honored techniques. Our Indonesian coffee comes from Sumatra, where the unique “wet-hulled” method gives beans a distinct dark-green hue and earthy flavor. The volcanic soils of Mount Leuser impart rich, full-bodied characteristics to the beans, resulting in a cup that is deep, complex, and uniquely Indonesian.

Africa:

Ethiopia: The Cradle of Coffee

Ethiopia is where the story of coffee began. In the ancient forests of Kaffa, Coffea Arabica was first discovered, and today, the country remains a powerhouse of coffee production. Our beans hail from the famed Sidamo region, known for producing some of the world’s most distinguished coffees. After careful sorting and traditional wet processing, the beans are sun-dried on African beds, developing a rich complexity. The resulting cup is vibrant, with floral notes and a unique, almost tea-like quality that transports you to the heart of the Southern Ethiopian highlands.

Kenya: A Vibrant, Intense Cup

Kenya is revered worldwide for its bold and vibrant coffees. Grown in the red volcanic soils around Mount Kenya, the beans develop an intense, bright acidity and complex flavors, often with juicy fruit notes. Coffee is meticulously sorted and processed in Kenya, ensuring only the best beans reach your cup. Our Kenyan coffee captures the essence of this vibrant land, offering a juicy, citrusy brightness balanced by a smooth body—perfect for those who crave a lively, energetic brew.
